following on from this thread http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?name=P ... 0&start=15

I am planning to drive my moggie to the national with a cracked (hairline) head! Now the garage reckon it should be good for at least 1000 miles, and I may as well get my use out of it before I change it

anyone agree? or do you think I am daft.

BTW I will also have my wife and a 2 year old daughter on board!!

Do you have breakdown recovery insurance?

yes, AA relay! I think breakdown is necessary if you are travling in a car with a small child, no matter how reliable it might be.

I'd say go for it then.

Well done, and good luck, I thought living dangerously was outlawed these days!

Yes, go for it, I agree, but dont thrash the car 50MPH will see you there and back. 70mph could see you on the hard shoulder.

Interesting. They told me they "don't cover cars as old as that"

Check with them on how many miles you are covered for. Some policies only cover 10 miles recovery.

I have full european aa breakdown cover, its expensive but has more than paid for itself over the years. Last year when I bought the lowlight I had to use the AA after overheating on the M6 in the cold and dark with no hazard lights. I wouldnt go too far without it, even though I can can fix most things myself, if you break down on any motorway recovery fees can be really expensive.

That information is incorrect- the AA cover the driver and NOT the car.

yes that its what they told me they will come and see me regardless of what age/make the car is.

I'd just replace the head with a good 2nd hand job. The only difficulty is finding a replacement and the fact you have very limited time. :(

I'm sure it'll be fine though, its abig old lump of iron. The crack wont expand unless you really boil it.

When you join the AA you have the choice of covering 'the car' of 'the
driver'. If you choose 'the driver' it doesn't matter whose car you are travelling in or how old it is, it will be covered. This means that all your vehicles (modern and classic) are covered by the one membership.
Seemed like a good deal to me.

I have to say I'm well enamoured with the RAC at the moment. Despite not having recovery they brought me 'n Brick home because 'it's freezing out there' and "she'll be stuck on the hard shoulder an hour waiting for a recovery vehicle, and it'll take less time for me to tow them home".

So ra for them :)

That's interesting because I have just renewed mine for myself and it won't cover my moggy as the moggy doesn't "qualify". When I enquired they said cars only "qualify" when under 10 years old. So I suppose it's a case of checking your policy as some are different to others. :D

Hmmm got towed home from somewhere last year and fixed by the road another time. I'm covered as a person not a car.

As an aside, the AA mechanics that came to help seem to enjoy the diversion of something unusual to fiddle with and usually have a few interesting stories to tell as well.

As with all things these days, the mechanics are under a lot of pressure to turn around jobs in a short time. As one was fixing my distributer he got three calls in 20 minutes from control asking, "Are you finished yet?"
