Electric ignition wow how cool!!!
I have just fitted an electric ignition!! bin your points/condenser forever I can recommend big time so easy to fit about 10-20mins max
Ahh - but points are well proven and easily fixed at the roadside. When electronic goes wrong - it's a nightmare. There really is no advantage on a simple A series engine of electronic ignition - unless going the whole hog and fitting fully mappable ignition with no dizzy! And even then really only and advantage on highly modified engines. So saying - my TR7 came with electronic ignition which seems to work well - but I have since bought and carry a full set of standard dizzy/coil with me all the time - just in case.

The Pertronix/Aldon Ignitor type of electronic ignition is simply a solid state contactless replacement for the points and condenser. They are more reliable than the standard system, never need adjusting or replacing due to wear, and it would be very quick and easy to swap back to points and condenser at the roadside if it did ever fail. There's certainly no need to carry a whole new distributor and coil.

to side track this post slightly, the TR7 Delco Remy distributor is horrible to adjust the points. They lie below the mechanical advance mechanism and I was so irritated by struggling to adjust them correctly that I fitted a Dolomite Sprint distributor to replace it. If your electronic system is working, leave it there.
Generally I see no reason to change from points however.

Yes Alec - I know ! And I cannot for the life of me understand why they designed it that way. The 'spare' dizzy came up on ebay complete with new cap/rotor and leads - for buttons. So I bought it - and I have a suitable coil. My theory is - if you have the spares with you - they will never be needed. Obviously there's a limit to this - at the moment I have a small rucksack stuffed with 'useful' spares that I (hope) will never need.

I have put Pertronix in most classic cars ive owned. Never had one problem or ever had to touch them after install.
Congrats on making a wise choice. Carry a set of points in the car just in case but leave all the other sets for the others.

Yes - it's Pertronix on my TR7. It's one system that does seem to work reliably! My mate has an electronic system (dunno the make but it has a reluctor under the rotor arm) on his MGB - constant problems - often standing in lay-bye, usually in the rain, fiddling with it! My Minor - good old points - set the gap once per year and never misses a beat.

I fitted the Aldon Ignitor type of electronic ignition I find it amazing the advance spark at high RPM in spot on (unlike ur fuddy duddy points) and after fitting it when I was setting the timing with the starting handle the can was firing up without trying!!!
I only wanted to let you know how good I thought it is I didn't want to upset the PURISTS out there LOL

yeah I've bagged up the points condenser and all the other gubins that I removed from the dissy and will carry them in the boot with the other bits and bobs spares and the kitchen sink.
