Windscreen washer not working

Post by MGFmad »

Another thing to fix  I presume its just a manual pump that operates as you press the button in on the dash (1968 Traveller) - is this located behind the dashboard?

Any tips for repair - or is replacement the only option?

When I put the electric one in mine I had to prime the pump with water by blowing it down from my mouthuntil the impellor/pump had water in it, this is because the pump cant suck on air. :)
hope this helps :)

It needs a one way valve at the bottle end of it too

Very often that 'one-way valve' incorporates a little filter screen - which becomes blocked with gunge. Clean it - and test the valve (by sucking/blowing) then try again. If still no go - take the tubes off the jets - and see if water at least comes out the tubes - if yes, then the jets are blocked! Clear them with a pin.

I'm having this trouble too, and have replaced the in-line one-way valve to no avail. How do I access the jets to take the tubes off, please?

You need to take the glove box liners out.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Try just pricking them with, well 'prickers' as supplied for welding torch etc - or just use a pin!

It can also be worrth while putting a finger over one of the jets and then pumping the washer as this will often clear a blocked jet and then do the same with the other one.
