Any suggestions?

Post by hotrodpussycat »

Hi there, wondering if any of you can help - I've just replaced the points, condensor, water pump and a few other bits on my moggy. However, now when accelerating it is making a ticking noise and there is squealing, as if sparks are being created somewhere. I have torque wrenched the cylinder head bolts and everything seems ok, but this noise and squealing has me lost. I have just put in a new water pump and it was converted to an alternator last November, Im just stumped.
Any ideas........please?!
Many Thanks

ticking could be many things, but you need to take it one step at a time.
First step is usually to eliminate everything you've just done, so
If you remove fanbelt - does that help?
If so then you only have a few things to check (pulleys all in line, fan clearance to radiator, belt tightness etc...)

Check the bottom pulley with the fan belt off.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

when you say ticking do you mean a tinkleing type of sound if so would think that you have caused the ignition to become advanced causing pre ignition. Its commonly called pinking,Easily done if you havent set the points gap correctly.Or upset the position of the distributor.Check the timing,if you don't know how to do that, and haven't touched the position of the distributor re check the gap in the points,if the gap is too wide it will advance the timing and cause the type of sound you are describing on hard acceleration. The squealing is probably a loose fan belt, the belt should be tight enough so that if you try to twist it at the longest run you can't turn it past about a quarter of a turn.

Agree - squealing is most likely loose fanbelt - but could be mis-aligned fan belt if the new water pump is not exactly in line with the other pulleys. Your other noise is indeed probably 'pinking' - retard the ignition slightly.
