can you advise on a problem that i have with a 1966 1098 gearbox, inside in the bellhousing there is a plate with 8 bolts behind the trust bearing, there is a bit of play in the shaft that comes from the gearbox and enters the clutch plate, you can move it left and right would the bearing and oil seal need replacing? Has anyone any suggestions
Regards

The fact that you can move the shaft to the left and right (or up and down) should not be a problem. When the gearbox is bolted to the back of the engine the tip of the shaft fits into a small hole in the back of the crankshaft which prevents this movement taking place.
There is no oil seal in the front of the gearbox. A spiral cut inside the plate prevents oil coming out when the shaft is rotating.
It may be worthwhile taking the plate off, examining the bearing and checking that it rotates smoothly but in order to replace the bearing you have to take the gearbox completely apart so unless things are very bad it is not worth worrying about it.

Yes - quite normal for there to be some 'play' in the input shaft.
