Anyone had any good (ingenous) alternative plans for a 'bespoke'(cheap) sand blasting cabinet? Needs to be big enough to take a wheel. I was gobsmacked that a sand blasting air tool cost under a tenner, now i need to make a cabinet to use it in.

I have one of the 'spot' blasting guns, which is great, but for larger jobs I take the part down the garden put a boiler suit on with a hat goggles and a rubber band around my neck (to stop the grit getting in) and just BLAST. Refilling the gun as required - hell of a mess, but it works ok!

i had considered the ' just blast' method , in the middle of no where of course, but doesnt that use up a lot of sand/media

Lay out a large Tarp to collect the used sand. Also I use block paving sand, nice and fine and only a couple of quid a bag.

Ive made two cabinets in the past both out of scrap wood. The 1st (which i still have now was simply a small wooden fram screwed together with cheap thin mdf sides. The top was a peice of plastic sheeting to let light in and it has a perpex window. As for the hand-slots, buy the biggest pair of rubber gloves you can get and staple gun them to two openings! Works an absolute beat! lol and for next to nothing.

For bigger jobs i construct a simple frame again from scrap wood and staple gun a plastic sheet around the outside, then another smaller one on the floor. It catches almost all of the sand and is clean so can be re-used. Leave the top open so it can let the dust out though.

It is completely illegal (and very foolhardy) to blast with 'sand'. Glass beads or some other media should be used - NOT sand, becuse of high risk to health from silicosis.

Thanks bmcecosse, I didn't know it was illegal to use sand. Thankfully only used it on a few small jobs. I shall modify my behaviour accordingly.

Well - it's certainly illegal in Industry - what you do to yourself is your own business as long as it doesn't affect others. But there is a very good health reason behind the ban !
