good to know!

Post by markattard »

I would like to know how to go about dismantling the rear wheel hub of a series II when the diff is disconnected frm the gearbox, i.e. no shaft in between (the reason being a complete overhaul of the engine and g-box)

It is very difficult to hold the hub still while you loosen the central nut, and to date I cannot find a way to keep the diff locked while I loosen this nut.

The obvious thing would be to wait till the g-box is reconnected to the diff and held in gear, but I would like to do this in lost time if possible.

Any ideas please?

What about bolting a ring spanner to the diff and jamming it between diff and floor?
Use a bolt that will go through one of the flange holes and stick a big washer on the nut to hold the spanner ring.
What would Macgyver do..?

How about bolting a length of Dexion etc. onto the diff flange to brace it against the ground?

The nut has nothing to do with the hub - it screws onto the axle casing - so connection of the gearbox etc is not relevant.
Edit - Sorry - didn't notice the Ser II note!!

According to the manual it is screwed onto the shaft:

and yep the best thing is to jamm the diff flange to the floor somehow, I hope the nut losens before the jam raises the whole car!

I'll give it a try and hope for the best, thanks

Can you not bolt a lever to the hub using two of the wheel bolts?

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
