I've had a go at trying to fit the screen, not getting anywhere fast, don't want to damage the paint work....or the rubber seal....

Can anyone recommend a mobile fitter in the Beds, Bucks area who could fit the screen for me....

thanks Keith

Hi Keith, I'm hoping to do this job quite soon on my splitty, what was the difficulty in fitting the screen then? Is it the centre piece, rubber or something else?

Iv'e done mine twice over 25 years, the first was easyish, but that was with an original rubber, the second about 6 months ago was very troublsome. The available rubbers are a very poor fit, there are various tips on the forum re fitment( do a search) you basically you have to assemble the whole sreen ie rubber, Dummy centre, and both glasses,Off the vehicle and fit it from the inside using plenty of slippery stuff. I used washing up liquid(I know I know before everybody starts shouting about salt :o ).Better with two or three people I did it on my own useing a length of rope from the centre strip to the bonnet handle and bits of wood from the seat to the glass to hold everything in place. I made a little tool from an old wiper arm to fit the rubber and the insert. Took it all out the first time because the rubber wouldn't sit properly on the frame then back in and the same thing was evident. The rubbers are very poor quality and will not let the glass far enough onto the frame and the outer lip sits off the frame,I used black silicon and put it right round the frame under the rubber and then with numerous lenths of wood strips all wedged against the garage wall and the rubber to push the rubber onto the frame to get an acceptable joint, left it to dry then did the same with the insert, which also is a poor fit. The car looked like it was having accupuncture (Wish I'd taken a photo). Don't know if anyone has found a better supply of rubbers, doubt it no demand for then now.I also used a cut down centre (They are too long to go through the frame from the inside) since I was renewing the old one. One tip also is to leave everything for a few days to settle in before removing the dummy centre to fit the correct one,you do not want the thing to jump out and the glasses to close up. it also helps a lot to get the rubber warm a supple, tub of hot water works . Good luck with it you'll need it :D :D

many thanks for the info, I've had one go and found exactly the same problem I couldn't force the rubber seal down enough to allow the glass to move forward into position.

This is a series 2 later dash, so I have to put the bottom seal in first to get behind the dash.

I'll have another go and use wood props as you suggest.

Maybe back to you for more info....

regards Keith
