weird spring washers

hiya,

was tightening a nut today which had a spring washer under it. Both were brand new. The washer spread out and ended up oval, giving no spring at all - had to take the nut off and put on a different washer.

Does this happen a lot? Seems odd :-?

Seems to happen fairly often with new spring washers - don't recall it ever happening with an old one. Last one that did it for me was on a brake caliper retaining bolt, so had to be replaced - a pain to find the right size one :(

odd innit? The new nuts don't seem to be made as robustly, either. :-?

Some swear (Innovator for one) that the washers don't really do anything and that threadlock is the best option. I'd have done that, but it would've meant the bolt rubbing on the back of the hub, and it's the kind of thing Mr MOT would notice if it wasn't there. Which bolt did you have the problem on?

Yeah, I read that. I'm happy with spring washers cos then I can put a leedle bit of copper slip on the thread and have a better chance of getting the thing undone in six years' time. Also I haven't used Loctite before and I don't like new things. "Snickers", indeed.

top nut holding driver side engine mount rubber to front plate. So, given that my front panel is off atm, it was just a question of puzzlement and a bit of lost time, rather than major hassle. :)

I'd say that one would be fine with threadlock, tbh
