So, the Morris Minor resto having been somewhat of a voyage of unpleasant discovery, and having hemhorraged more cash than I have come in in about 1/3 of a year on it, and having had the disaster that is the Viva cluttering up my life and causing more curses than I've known existed in my little skull to be spoken...

Meet JeJy (or Joggernaught, for long) a DAF44 sourced for the entire purpose of my partner not having to learn stick-shift for the year that we're planning to be here.

She's off to a local person who's happy to lop out the sills and replace, and replace the bits of floor that don't exist anymore, too. Remarkably (and this surprised me) she's a runner - couple of minor electrical issues...

Now we're just praying that the motorbike lasts until either JeJy is back, or the minor's finished. I still haven't entirely worked out what's wrong with it.

He was quite upbeat - because the rust is (apart from that front floorpan) very localised - and the rest of the underside seems very solid. That and apart from the sills themselves (which thankfully are available) the rusty bits of the whole thing are made up of fairly much flat panels with 90 degree bends in them.

Heroes? Whyfor?

I got to go for a drive in a DAF33 yesterday; I have a disturbing feeling that I might enjoy driving the 44 quite a lot :)

Disturbing in the 'oh DONT SWEAR OR YOU WILL BE BANNED, another car I like' kind of way. Apparently, driven gently they can return around 50mpg... which is pretty impressive :)

Well, the Viva never cost much, it's just it's cooling system was never really up to scratch. The minor, mechanically, was incredibly cheap to run. Had a certain company done their job 5 years ago then it'd've remained a very cheap car overall, to run.

The DAF's a bit of a...well...it's not to be used for quite such a long, harsh run every day - and it's an auto - and I want one, and they don't really exist in Canada, so...

My wife had a couple of DAFs- (actually before she was - if you take my meaning).

I suppose that strictly they weren't - Volvo 66 then a 343 - but close enough for me...

The only problem I remember - with the 66 was finding the elastic bands (drive belts) - are they still available?
(The other proble was the non-servo drum brakes - but the pedal's big enough for 2 feet).

They sort of seem to be available; I'm hoping not to have to put new belts on in the intended year of ownership...
