Thinking ahead a bit here but I will need to replace some of the timber sections, on looking at the joints they are screwed together - presumably the joints are also glued? If so do I use normal waterproof PVA type glue or is there a preferred product.

white pva even waterproof is no good on hardwoods for external use.

i would use the modern PU glues
these are expanding glues, easily rubbed down and will take any stain or varnish without leaving a mark
be careful when using these glues as they will expand so u only need a little on the joint and kep it cramped, etc until cured about 15 mins in the summer


the trouble with white glue, unless it is painted over , will leave a dark glue line when stained

on the subject of glue and varnish, although I don't have a trav myself my parents used to, and only sold her (within the village:-)) due to rot in the woodwork... what'd your opinion be on using 2 part polyurethyne (sp?!) varnish, as used so much on yachts - for outdoor woodwork it should be fairly formidable?

the 2 part should be pretty good i would have thought.
but it is the glued joints that are most vunerable to rot where the water can lay, and of course all timbers shrink

so my first bet would be to make sure the timbers used are well seasoned, before fitting, and all important get good joints, do not RELY ON GLUE TO FILL BAD FITTING JOINTS, they will let water in and rot

i would use a good clear preservative, sikkens do a really good one now, and is spirit based so drys fairly quickly, but get it good on the back where you can not get at the timber once fitted ie, where the panels fit behind the ash
