Fenchurch's silencer has rotted through so I need a new exhaust system fairly quickly. I've decided against a large bore system for various reasons (mainly the cost), and I really don't want a one-piece mild steel system after all the trouble Neil had on last year's LEO. The cheaper two-piece stainless systems don't seem to have a good reputation so I've narrowed the choice down to the higher quality two-piece stainless system from ESM and Bull Motif's three-piece stainless system. Anyone tried either of these exhausts?

We've got 2 cars with the 2 piece stainless system from Bull Motif and have'nt had any problems - they've been on a few years now

The Bull Motif 2-piece system is "NO LONGER SUPPLIED DUE TO QUALITY PROBLEMS" and they are recommending the 3-piece one instead. From the description I suspect the 2-piece system BM used to sell is the same as the cheaper 2-piece one from ESM.

The usual problem with the stainless systems is that they are rather noisy. I have had a two piece system fitted for the last eight years with no problems except that I fitted a second straight through silencer at the rear becauseof the excessive noise (to my ears anyway).

ESM and BM claim the more expensive stainless system is quieter than the cheap one (in fact ESM say theirs is quieter than their mild steel system).

They have quoted £250, so too high for me. I think that price is for a standard stainless system, not high performance.

Didn't you put on the 940 head and hif38 carb when you did your rebuild ?

Wouldn't a large bore exhaust benefit your set up?

No, I've got a HIF38 and alloy inlet but haven't got around to fitting it yet. The head is a very slightly ported 12G202. I still don't know how much difference a larger bore exhaust system would make to the performance but I'm not convinced it could be enough to justify the big price difference, unless I was prepared to cobble a system together from odds and ends dug out of the scrap yard (which I'm not - this is on my daily driver and I want to get it replaced one evening this week).

ive got a 2 piece stainless fro charles ware its been on there for 2 years abd its been fine.now ive said that it will probally fall off now

A well ported head together with good manifold/s and larger bore exhaust does make quite a difference. An LCB type exhaust is probably overkill for mild mods and the marina manifold and oversize exhaust would do the job well.

I think the smallest size is 1 3/4" but Jetex do stainless steel sections as well as silencers from which you can put together your own system. E.g straight sections, bends and the 'up and over bit' for over the axle.

Their boxes are 'sporty' ones so might not be quiet enough for you though.

I decided to order ESM's more expensive two-piece stainless system. It is made by GS Exhausts.

I fitted a two piece stainless exhaust to my pickup four years ago.It was made by GS Exhausts,and has been no trouble in that time.

Apart from one not fitting brilliantly I've had no problems with any of the one piece systems from ESM (mild steel), they're made by bosal and for £30 or so you can't go wrong.

Exhaust arrived and fitted. The only slight hiccup encountered was one of the mounting straps needed shortening by about an inch. It is slightly louder than the old one (even with the rotten silencer) - not enough to bother me but it might annoy some.
