Gearbox noise/ Non-Morris

Hi all
My Volkswagen Polo (2001) is making a worrying noise when changing gear (when pushing my foot down on the clutch and releasing ).
It only started today and drives fine and pulls and accelerates as usual.
Any one know what it could be?

Define the noise?
If it's a cable clutch then it could well be the cable running dry and groaning/ squeaking. But it could be one of any number of things based on the description!

It’s a scratching/ grinding noise

What you have there is a 6N2 polo. (i have one too) From what your saying, the pedal box welds are cracking. Its a big problem on the Gti.
Is the nose only when the cluth is pressed?
is it only when the pedal is moving, does it stop when the pedal stops at the bottom?
is the noise engine/road noise related, if it happens seperate from pedal movement?

The noise is when the pedal is pressed and released, it only makes the noise whilst in motion and it stops when the pedal is pressed at the bottom and when fully engaged. The noise is coming from the gearbox.

If the noise is only happening while the pedal is moving then it must be in the chutch actuating circuit. I think they have the automatis clutch adjusted on the cable, these are renound for failing. with the engine off, get someone to pump the pedal up and down, and listen under the bonnet to locate the noise. To remove the engine cover look for 1" plastic circles in the engine cover, (on the 1.4 there are 2) under these there are 10mm nuts and then the cover will pull off. careful of any breathers.
Once it is off look on the clutch cable and you will probably see a big plastic tube, hold this while someone pumps the pedal and if it feels like it is grating then its the adjuster. If the noise is not from here get a length of metal and while the engine is off and the pedal is being pumped touch it on pieces of the mechanism and listen to the other end (you`ll need to press it against your ear)

Gutted, rather than going straight to a dealer to get the parts give
http://www.vagparts.com a ring. They are near the new B&Q in swindon and can get pretty much anything OEM from the factory for VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda

Update:
A new clutch has been fitted by the garage, BUT that’s not the problem.
They have now ordered a part for the gearbox that was loose.
I tread to think what the bill will be.
