Okay boys and girls, I've tracked down a suitable 5 speeder type 9

and I'm trying to work out what I am going to need in order to fit it.

Obviously I'm going to need to do something about the bellhousing, I'm guessing the clutch will need to be changed - for what I don't really know. And I seem to recall something about the crossmember too.

Any Ideads for the next step?

Does anyone have an idiots guide?

there are kits available from the major supliers.

I think about £500 is what it costs for the bits. Type 9 feels nice with a quick shift also, but another £50.

mine has a birmingham kit with different release bearing and a sierra 1.6 clutch.

But I've already got this 'box (well, still have to pick it up....)

Prospective buyers of the Fiat box should be aware the top gear ratio is 1:1. ie - It doesn't have any 'overdive' capability and so gives little advantage over a normal 4 speed box. I suppose in a highly tuned engine with a very narrow 'rev' band - the 5 speeds may be useful - but a normal or mildly modified engine copes fine with the normal 4 speeds.

Just out of interest, has anyone every tried fitting one of the OD boxes from a triumph/MG in a Minor?
Are they massively too big?

There must be a cheaper 'bodgers' way other than throwing loads of money at sierra conversions.

Have you seen the price of an OD Triumph 4 pot OHV box though?

Sierra ones are a lot cheaper (or used to be last time I looked a couple of years ago). It's nice to have a couple more gears at the flick of a switch (till the wires short and electrocute you every time you touch the stick) but they're heavy, quite bulky and pretty complicated.

The plus side is there's no need for a custom bellhousing, but you do need the Marina flywheel and probably back plate.
