Post by tortron »

i just read that there was an early and a later version of the master cylinder. Is this true?
If so how can i tell the difference, i.e. part numbers.

Yes, two sizes (difference is in bore size) early cars (7" drums all round) had the larger bore, later 8" braked cars had the smaller bore.

I thought it was the early master cylinder that was 7/8" and the later one that was 13/16", best check.

From a spares website

Brake Master Cylinder 13/16" Bore (Genuine Lockheed) RECOMMENDED The 7/8" Bore Master Cylinder fitted to Pre 1962 Models is no longer available. The 13/16" can be used as a replacement for Pre 1962 models.

I had a look at the master cylinders on the shelf at my workshop and have got the following information that may be of help.

Early Lockheed 7/8" Master Cylinder Part Number LM18702

Late Lockheed/Delphi 13/16" Master Cylinder Part Number LM15453

Currently the late 13/16" Master Cylinder is manufactured by Caparo-AP Braking and their Part Number is 4225-453 PT3P and is available from most specialists.

I think MGM Spares who advertise in the club magazine have recently had the early master cylinder made but I suggest ringing them to check.

Hope this helps, regards Moggs222
