Over christmas i fitted brand spanky new chrome rear bumper blades on my traveller. Its been garaged 2548 out of the 2668 HOURS they have been on the car and today i noticed they are showing signs of rust.
Now call me picky but i am not sure that this is acceptable.
I have seen posts before about poor chrome but this, i feel, is taking the wassname.
Has anyone had any success returning goods to the supplier in this sort of time quoting goods not fit for purpose?

WELL I WOULD HAVE SAID TOTALLY UN ACCEPTABLE

i would take them back and tell them you are not happy and they should last at least longer than that

as an example my chrome is original on my car and is still in good shape and has been outside for the last 5 years

Pattern chrome is crap, decent chrome plating should have a layer of zinc or copper underneath it,
Take it back and have a good moan!

And get some compensation for your time involved!

hi all well the problem with new chrome it is done very so cheaply in fact they hardiy put any nickel on .we find this in a lot of cases as long as the item looks bright then thats ok.
but you can get them looking bright in 5-8 minutes no way long enough they should be in the nickle tank for a min of 25 minutes longer the better[[ i should know ]] there is a nickle on the market item look very bright in a few minutes done for offices item ok in side no good out side if there were a control on how much nickle they put on the better but in the end we will all be paying more i dont think most of use would mind if they were better & last longer a few hours in the wet is not good enough neil

I once had the bumpers plated on a Triumph, and if there was even a hint of road salt about I had to wash them when I got home or they went rusty! Something missing in the process methinks

Well that sounds like a new record to me 20hrs in the open keep us informed of what the supplier says.

They may have been salted during the bad weather ? My Trave bumpers were new 7 years ago - the car is rarely wet although the rear bumpers often get a soaking if i'm working in the garage with the rear of the car sticking out the doors. They are still very very good - but - I do regularly give them a coating of hard wax, and i dry them off most times when closing up the garage. Thick wax regularly would seem to be a wise precaution!

I find the old Simoniz good on chrome

Now lets be fair...it was 120 hours
I spoke to the suppliers today and they are sending me a new pair in the post, no charge (no pooh) and no postage charge and i can return the old ones when i am in the area. I will ensure that they are well waxed before i fit them.
HMMMM...... i wonder if quick release may be a consideration

I'd paint the backs with Hamerite before I fitted them if I were you.

Painting yes, but not Hammerite - it'll just rust away underneath the stuff, IME

Dinitrol 3125, 2 coats, allow to 'dry' between coats, on rear of bumper and face of valance then plenty on the fixings during assembly - but mind it dont all slip on the floor!

Well done for going back to the supplier to get it sorted.
Sadly this kind of thing is common and if the supplier doesn't want to take interest, quote the "1987 sale of goods and services act"

i had a new pair of blades delivered today and i will fit them at the weekend AFTER taking note of the above.,( if it was one of MY customers i would have included a note saying 'sorry bout that' but it was just the bumpers.)

Suggest the Sale of Goods Act 1979 if you're going to quote anything
