Rear Hub Nut

I need to change the rear hub oil seal and in the sticky spanner sizes it says
"Rear Hub Nut 1,1/8W (although 1,7.8 AF is a very good fit & works)"
I have just read the latest edition of Minor Monthly and it says that later cars had 1 3/4" AF nuts.
I need to buy a socket and don't want to buy the wrong one.
Any suggestions?

Happen to have that spanner in front of me, and just checked - it's 1 1/4 BS - 1 1/.8 W and fits the latest hub nut. Measured it and it is approx 1.9 inches AF, so I guess that 1 3/4 may do it

Just chisel it -in fact it may only be finger tight anyway!

Just chisel it
Not exactly good advice especially when a socket size was asked for.

But the method followed by many over the years!

That still doesn't make it a good engineering practice.

Despite agreeing with you, Kevin, life's just too short to go over this yet again

Sorry but I hate bodge engineering when the appropriate tool is available.

Me too - needs to be said, I guess, but I for one just couldn't face the discussion again

Me neither! Buy a socket if you wish - I'm too broke to do that for something I may only use every 15 years! And as I said earlier - they are often not that tight - a tap gets it moving.

Picked up a 1,1/8 WW socket just now for £6.50 on fleabay.
Thanks for all the advice. I'll put the chisel away now!

Just to clarify - all the sticky spanner sizes have been checked several times and are correct.
The rear hub nut is 1,1/8W spanner size but 1,7/8 AF is the nearest equivalent and works a treat as a couple of others on here will testify
The 1,1/8Whit socket is readily available on ebay for about £5
