Convertible Hood studs

The pop studs on the hood of a convertible need a special tool to fit. I tried everywhere to get one of these without success. I got round this with a dremel drill. Dremmels are fantastic bits of kit anyway so go out and buy one if you haven't got one already. The outer piece of the hood studs have a hollow shaft on the back which is splayed with the proper tool but you can get round this by cutting a + down the length of the shaft with a small disc on a dremel. Push the stud home on the hood, fit the backing piece and splay the 4 sections out.
Job done.

Bought mine from C Ware Bath/Bristol.

Moss have them - and Robsport. It's just a little punch and a die to support the back of the stud. Very difficult to use on the car! Need at least 3 hands.

That is indeed the problem if your hood is already fitted. I imagined the ideal tool to be more like a pair of pliars.

Sadly no! And since on my TR7 hood the studs are useless and have torn the material - I intend to fit my new hood using Velcro, that's unless I can get someone to repair the old hood (only damage is at these studs) - although I will still go for Velcro.
