From memory its a bit of a fiddle if its in situ in the car. But its do-able. Just undo the two bolts holding it to the gearbox casing and the earth cable attached to the back. Should pull straight out.

Piece of quiche to do a starter, just the wire and two bolts to sort*. Dunno about the bulkhead mounted solenoid, but the later version lower down is dead easy too

*I only know the later vehicles though, before someone points out any stupidity

If it went 'clunk' then good chance it's just a poor battery or earth connection. Check them all out first before rushing into starter changes. But yes - if it needs doing it really is dead easy.

Dunno is that's 'good news' - working starter are v cheap, battery not so cheap! Sure it's not just terminal damage ?
