REAR SHOCK MOUNTS??

Hi all, now that i've made a start I wanted to ask about rear shock moints welded on the inner wings. These are on a shell ive bought. I guess they are for an upgrade but what fits them?

From memory I think that certain telescopic damper connversions do, but i think most bolt to the boot floor.

These will be for the Kayaba 342001 gas dampers for the classic mini kit. You will also need the special lower spring plate that has the other end of the mounting on it. Superior to the kit that uses the boot floor, as your kit has dampers that are more upright, so better efficiency.

The 'inner wing' has very little strength - I would avoid using these. Any mount for rear dampers should in some way lock onto the original damper mount on the rear 'chassis' member - or at least connect to the chassis members in some way.

Thanks for this useful reply to my enquiry. Would you know where the bottom mounts are from? The inner wings of my project are new and look very strong. Is this a common conversion and would it be worth fitting them as I have got the under boot damper kit

Hi,
My saloon had this type of shock system fitted (before I fitted the v8!)
Mine had re-inforcing bars in the boot.
The re-inforcing went from the inner wing down to the chassis rail.
Has yours got these???????

Yes, the mount runs all the way down to the bottom of the inner wing.
The axle mounts in the link, look like the ones I have for the under boot conversion which im guessing is what is in the link

There really is no strength in the 'inner wing' unless it is seriously braced across side to side and down to the chassis rails. If you have the under boot kit - and it's not cracked yet - then be content!

The only kits which employ brackets welded to the outside face of the inner wing are C.Wares and C.S Autoclassics. However C.Ware has now opted for a version similar to of our rear telescopic kit.
The major problem with these kits is the strength of the inner wing and its trueness to the rest of the car,let alone the datum points for the suspension kits bottom mounting. You are also limited to a 175 width tyre as any more width will contact the damper.
Replacement units are Armstrong, Monroe, Spax or Koni. give one or both of the suppliers I mention a ring I'm sure they will be happy to help.

I fitted one of the kits from ESM. The channel is bolted to the boot floor and welded to the chassis at the ends. The bottom plate bolts on to the U bolts. Here is a pic if it is of any help.

Aye - but unfortunately dampers at an angle like that are very inefficient - should be vertical for best effect. Are there not holes there to allow the damper to sit more vertically ? But that mount is certainly way better than anything connected only to the 'inner wing'!

Apart from the fact that if no floor strengthening is carried out to the floor this channel section will rip it open, as has been the experience of many contributors on this forum. Why it is still available for sale is beyond me.

Should the ends of this kit like in the link not be welded to the rear chassis rail? If not then would it help? and what strengthening to the floor would be needed, I would have thought a saloon floor was quite strong with the metal part of the seat backing. I would have thought the lower shock mount from a van/pickup would have been a better design wouldn't it? I certainly don't think it looks a strong enough kit for coil overs like the pic suggests.

Not sure what you're trying to say over vans and pick-ups, but FWIW they have telescopic dampers, top mounted to a chassis X member and the bottom to the plate under the spring - sorry, can't remember if you have a van and already know this.
As JLH says though, whatever the boot floor looks like, it isn't strong enough to be the top mount for the dampers, as various people on here will testify

Was that ment for me there BG?? If twas then I thought it was clear, your right the vans have tele tampers, and what i'm saying is the bottom mounting plate attached to the spring is a better design than the one supplied in the kit. And yes I do have a van aswell as a traveller, my signiture pics say it all
I'm not actually wanting to fit a kit like this myself, just wondering why it's so badly designed, and trying to find out what needs doing to make it better should anyone already have one?
