Fitting 948 brakes to a side valve

Post by moggs222 »

Has anybody fitted the 948 front brake back plate/wheel cylinder assemblies to a side valve. I know kits are available but I want to know if the later assemblies fit the early stub axles with out modification. Any help/suggestions appreciated.

My Series MM now has a 948 axle and 8 inch front drums and remember buying new uprights (but not trunions) backplates brake cylinders hubs bearings etc from a main dealer of all places! But to answer your question about bearings fitting the original stub axles I dont think they do.

Graham Holt has done the conversion and I am trying to get him to do a write up. He used the Minor 1000 swivel pins but that should not make any difference as the back plate hole spacings are the same. (See Tech. Info). As far as I know the back plate and wheel cylinder assembly is a straight swap. The only thing you should check is the thread on the wheel cylinder end of the flexible brake hose, it may be different.

Thanks but my main interest is to know if the standard 948 back plate, wheel cylinder and brake shoe assembly will fit the early swivel pin/drum set up. I know ESM do a "conversion kit" but is this just standard parts or does something have to be modified. Again any help appreciated, many thanks Moggs222

The 948 back plate and brake cylinder assembly is a straight swap onto either the original MM swivel pins or the M 1000 swivel pin convertion (see Tech. Info.). You will also have to use the 948 flexible brake hose as the wheel cylinder thread is different. You can then keep your original MM brake drums.
I checked this info out this afternoon.

Thanks for the information, fitting the 948 back plate assembly seems the way to go to keep costs down and get my car on the road.
