Carburettor Dashpot

I have just spent a bit of time making a new throttle spindle and re bushing the carb body as it was so worn it was untrue (130,000 miles)
Anyway it all fits quite nicely now and I am interested as to what others put in the dashpot, the Operations Manual refers to SAE 20 and I have always put in enine oil which is usually a 20-50 multigrade, could this be a bit thick?

I keep a small tin of 3 in 1 oil just for the dashpot. If you were very particular I suppose you would have one grade for summer use and one for winter use!

3 in 1 seems very light I would guess at lighter than 20 grade? Does this create a flat spot on pulling away?

I use Burlen SU carb oil.
I know it's expensive at a fiver a go, but it lasts forever...

Didn't know you could get SU Carb oil, how does it seem viscosity wise?

Not all that thick, just a bit thicker than 3 in 1

Yes, 3 in 1 works well as does the ESM oil- great suppliers BTW. Dont use 20W50 as my Trav seemed a little more sluggish and a slight pink on throttle opening- perhaps 20W50 is too thick and the piston does not rise quickly enough to richen the mixture. BTW, I use my Minor quite a bit so throttle response is important to me.

I've found ESM/Bull Motif to be good. Do be sure the area is still sound behind the post, and if it isn't, get one of these
http://morrisminorspares.co.uk/shop/pop ... p?pID=2397 not one where there's an angle which is meant to cover the outside of the post. They don't seem to be on the ESM site any more, but that's what I ended up with

PM sent too, btw

I thought that if the piston was slow to rise ie thicker oil that it caused the mixture to richen while it was rising, because of the extra suck across the carburettor bridge?

Lets just say that 3 in 1 does the job and my Series MM has numerous podium finishes in the traffic light grand prix to prove the point!!

I know what you mean, too much tyre smoke impedes rear vision!
