Ok - this is here partly as today's story and partly to remind me what I did for when I go back to it!

Today's job: replace the broken drivers side door handle

1) removed the window winder, door pull, and door opening handle
2) removed the door card
3) undid the 3 screws for the door lock
4) messes around working out what to do next
5) greased the window winder mechanism
6) removed the 2 bolts at the bottom of the winder channel, and the one at the top, using as 12mm bit
6A) (added in - forgot I did this bit): tried to remove the split pin to disconnect the locking mechanism from the internal handle
6B) broke the split pin instead. But managed to disconnect the mechanism
7) tried to push, pull, bend the channel out of the way so i could remove the lock
8.) wound the window up and down a lot, pleased with the newly greased mechanism.
9) sneered at the instructions i had that said the lock came out through a hole in the side of the door
10) looked at the very nice BL manual someone put online. It said remove the window channels up the way by taking out all the bolts and the little screw
11) took out the little screw
12) failed to get the very rusty bolt at the bottom of the channel out. Didnt have the right spanners to grip it from the back - 12mm didnt do it, 11mm missing, its probably the spanner in between anyway!
13) wife phoned from the house, time to come in
14) put most of it back again, ready for next time

15) tried to start the car, for the first time ever it didnt want to

16) the starter kept disengaging as if the car was starting anyone know why?

17) noted the choke cable had come loose
18.) fixing it made no difference
19) started it with no choke but the foot flat on the accelerator
20) reversed it too far into the garage (lol)

OK :) Wish me luck for next time

missed a bit:

14A) dropped a bolt down into the door. It went into the corner. I cant reach it. Where's that extending magnet?

What - no holes in the door bottom for it fall through ? Somehwere I've got various 4 door handle bits Barry - but I think they are very different to your 2 door handles.

I think I did mention when I sent the handle that you need to unbolt and lift up the door top to get the latch mechanism out because the channel gets in the way. It's a bit of an awkward job particularly the first time you do it, and nearly inevitable that you'll drop something important into the door bottom.

The bolts are almost certainly BSF so you'll need a Whitworth spanner/socket set. The ones that hold the door top on are particularly awkward because you need small diameter sockets that will fit through the access holes in the door.

Is the battery charged up?

:) Battery excellent, starter just seems to stop and then make a hideous choking noise

I think you'll have to take the starter motor off and have a look at the drive mechanism.

Does the engine turn over ok by hand - on the handle ?
