Do you prime the oil pump before fitting? I,m sure I read somewhere that you,ve got to pack them with vaseline before fitting but can I find it now!
or just pump it full of oil from an oil can most of which would drain out and spin the motor without plugs and hope it self primes.

I fill mine with fresh engine oil.

Fresh oil in the pump - add vaseline if the engine is going to stand for a while (more than a few weeks) otherwise don't worry. And yes - spin it up on the starter until you get pressure - this also checks if there are any leaks at the filter!

I have never primed mine. Just remove plugs and spin on starter until the oil pressure light goes out. You would have assembled the engine with copious amounts of oil of course so there is no real problem.

If the pump is bone dry - it can be scored - and just sometimes it will not prime up. There are ways of reverse priming it on the engine - but normally it is fine if just pre-filled with oil when fitting.
