Engine steady bracket

Post by Bazzalucas »

Hi, I have a 1958 2-door with a 948. I have no engine steady assembly, (the one running from the bulkhead to the cyl. head), and there don't appear to be any holes where one would normally be. Was this a later addition, (to handle the awesome power of the 1098!) and is there any benefit to putting one in? Thanks! Baz

It was indeed a later addition to counter clutch judder with the later type of clutch. As was the gearbox steady cable. If you do not have clutch judder I would leave well alone.

My Series 11 - 803cc of 1953 dosent have this - I'm not sure when it came in but my 1961 Traveller had one fitted.

The bulkhead tie bar and the steady cable appear to have been introduced during the early/mid part of the Series II, according to the BMC workshop manual.

I still have the tie bar, but the steady cable is no longer fitted, as it doesn't work with the Toyota 5-spd crossmember! Get a slight judder in reverse sometimes, but nothing serious.

I have the trans cable underneath...but no tie bar. Oh, well, clutch judder, so I'll let sleeping dogs lie. Thanks for the input.
