I have just received a list of past owners from the dvla . It is a great help but does anyone know how far they actually go back ? I have been told that they can only go back to about 1980. On the info they have supplied it states that we are the 4th owner , would this be from new or from the furthest they can go back (1980s). Any help on this would be great as we are trying to make our cars history book.

Who told you they can only go back to about 1980? My list of previous owners supplied by the DVLA goes back to March 1968 when the car was new. They may have incomplete records for your car which is why they can only go back to 1980.
Did you get a typed sheet headed "Keeper history details"? If so this will show how many owners the car has had and acquisition / disposal dates. If the first acquisition date doesnt start until 1980 then I guess you are the 4th owner since that date rather than the 4th owner from new.
Hope this makes sense

Steve,
I'm not sure if I'll be able to help as I didn't get a page titled "Record of licences issued".
Do you know when your car was first registered? (It should be on the V5C). Does the "record of licences issued" page show any dates? If so does this tie in with the date your car was first registered? If so then the person named is probably the first owner.
The V5C should also list the number of former keepers.
Hope this helps,
Louise

You would be the 4th keeper from new by my reckoning, In my case I'm the 6th, the names and addresses of the 5th and 4th are writted on a page, these and the rest of the owners are mentioned on various other photocopied documents( pretty poor quality) that were enclosed, enough to go right back to when new.

They certainly go back to the year the car was issued, as I have all the owners from 1960 on mine. It even tells me the original reg number, the car it was swapped onto and the date the engine was changed. I suppose its a matter of luck as to how complete the records are.

When DVLC was created in the 1970s they took all their information from the County Councils who were responsible for registering and licensing vehicles prior to that date.
Some records were lost, destroyed or never transferred over. Some of the early microfilm tapes at Swansea are possibly unreadable now as well.
Have you tried the county council archives from where the mog originally came from? They may have some info there

I think DVLA computer records only go back a limited period.
They do, however, keep the earlier records on microfiche.
In the past when I've obtained copies of my vehicles history I've had everything going back to when first registered - in 1956 for my A35.
Like I say part is print out of computer record and rest copies of the original paper documents.
Some non DVLA computer resistered paper records aren't held at Swansea so you have to go back to the original registering county office.
Not all county records are complete.
I had a Berkeley T60 which the club easilly manage to get a copy of the information requried to allow the original registration to be retained (on non transferable basis) but with an old motorbike no county records are held so I'll get an age related instead.
