Fan Belt Length

Many years ago I fitted a water pump and a thermostat to my Morris to encourage it to warm up quicker (it worked) but I was never very happy about the length of belt this new setup required, it always seemed very difficult to get on.
However as the car is now roadworthy after many inactive years I have tried a couple of sizes and found that the best length seems to be a B34 which is big enough to get over the pulleys and small enough to have some adjustment range. Is this what anybody else uses?
On all the belts I have tried they all seem to be very tight to get between the water pump nut and the radiator core, turned to its thinnest section it is a tight slide fit in the gap thats there, its never been in a shunt is anybody elses gap this small?

It is a tight fit. I still have the fan blades on the dynamo and I use a special neoprene multi link belt which is resistant to oil and can be adjusted to the correct length. A bit expensive at £110 for a 5mtr box but lasts for 10 years of everyday use.
