Hey guys! Got the new springs etc for my morris last week and today started cleaning up my rear axle. After taking all the springs etc off and all the gunk was cleaned off it I was horrified to see the condition of the left side of the exle.
Appart from this one bit the rest of the axle is in very good condition, Can this be saved? is it ok to use it like this? Do I need a new axle? Can i weld a patch?
Any advice would be great.
Below: this is the rust on the bracket
Below: the rust on the actual axle
Below: Notice a small hole that I punched in the casing by accident with a air chissel

Hello Andrew,
I'm sure that it can be repaired but very accurate work is necessary, as is ensuring the welding doesn't distort the casing. I would suggest the best route is a second hand axle casing as they should be plentiful and cheap?

You may have done well to find that weak spot with the chisel.
Once you get one little hole in an axle another will follow eventually. Happens a lot on many cars around the rear of the diff housing.
Have plugged the holes with chemical metal once ot twice as a running repair but 6 months later another appears.
Long term a better condition one would be the answer and paint it well before fitting.
As Alec said they seem to be plentiful.

I've got a spare Series MM axle if anyone is interested, but not a 1000.

I have an almost new 1098 back axle complete with diff and half shafts, but I fear I may be too far away from you for you to collect it. I could bring it up to Leicester.
Nice an shiny, black hammerited at Christmas!

No worries Andrew, it's here if you want it. I'll put it on the 'for sale' board in a couple of weeks along with the rest of my stuff
Cheers

Hey Dave
All the axles at the scrappy were just as bad as mine, not surprised really.
Would you really be prepared to bring it to Leicester?? I will put a wanted add in but if nothing turns up a bit closer I might take you up on the offer
Kind Regards
Andy
