Chatting with Alex recently prompted me to check out the engine number, came from the fact I'm still adament to get a 5 speed gearbox one day and the fact that scabby has lots of power left at 65mph but its revving to highly for long term kindness at that speed.
It truly feels like it has more grunt than a 1098 - but could be just because of the good condition.

So engine number is KAR 13200 which seems a bit odd !!!!
And yes its as that on the log book too !



Its a recon engine which migth explain the number anyone know?



Just been rooting through the paper work to see if i could find the reciept but cant for the time being.

Did find something good though - a letter from the last but one owner to the last detailing the £3500 of work that was done on a complete renovation of the underside !
Pretty chuffed with that, goes a very long way to explaining the A1 condition external floor side

Looking at the spacing, I wonder if it was rebuilt by a person or company with the initials KAR on the 1st of March 2000? It appears as if the original tag has been removed and they've stamped that directly onto the block.

True! it's got a B-series marina thermostat housing (or something very similar) so the standard hose won't fit anyway. I'd probably do the same (leave the new bits in a box and wait until something needs doing before it gets high on the priority list).

As for the engine number - that's been re-stamped. Most likely reason is stated above that it was done by a reconditioning company. The original numbers are on a plate riveted to the block and the letter stamping is male not female.

For anyone fastidious about looking original, the original style male lettering can be reproduced if you want to pay a small fortune. The easiest way is to get a plate etched (they print the lettering and the etch eats away the metal that's not printed).

You can see the tops of the original fixing studs which held the engine number plate in position, this indicates that the engine was reconned because the machine shops just shear the studs off when they rebore the engine. I can't imagine them being worried about a new engine number either but a later owner may have made up his own!
