Changing Timing Chain (It's possible!)

Post by alanworland »

Done it! After much grovelling I have replaced all crankshaft shells AND the timing chain with the engine in position and only the sump removed.
I linked the new chain to the old and turned the flywheel to wind the new chain into position then removed the old one and joined the new one together. This took longer to do than write! especially getting the link in!
Peering up into the timing case the old chain was quite worn (80000) with a fair amount of 'backlash' in the drive to the camshaft, the new one seems almost tight with no backlash.
Crank shells were starting to break up with small bits missing, the worst was the centre main which was losing its thrust faces, but fortunately no damage to crankshaft which looked in very good order (also 80000)
New oil and filter over the weekend then I will turn it over on the starter to fill the oilways before going for a fire up.!
