Heritage certificates report the entry in the factory records i understand. Are the factory records a matter of public record or are they 'owned' by the certificate people?

I dont think that a full set of records survives anywhere.

The Heritage Trust owns the copyright on all records.

You can, by prior appointment, access the original build ledgers for your motor, which will tell you basic information. You do get to find out the build date of your car. Phyllis was born on the 27th February 1962. :)

The one I'm referring to is The BMIHT (British Motor Industry HEritage Trust) http://www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk/

The reason i ask is that there is to be a web rally at gaydon on the 27th april (http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?name=P ... ic&t=19078) and it might be fun if the records could be avaiable.

The records are held at Gaydon, but unfotunately closed at weekends.
