Calling all Moggy Musicians

So, any of you Moggy lot play a musical instrument? Quite a few of my classic car buddies have been in bands over the years. I played lead guitar in three Scottish bands during the 70's and 80's.

I'm currently running a Fender Strat through a Korg AX3000 guitar effects board, and into a VOX AC30. I've also got a Westfield Les Paul fitted with Seymor Duncan Pickups and at 1/5th the price of a Gibson Les Paul, it sounds excellent.

I also play some Bass and Keyboards, but lead guitar is the primary instrument. Just do music for fun these days, mostly instrumental

I play guitar (and sometimes bass) in various bands in the Kent area. I have whittled my electric guitar collection down to 79' Cherry Sunburst LP Custom, 92' USA Strat, and 92' Ibanez Jem (Yellow). Amp is a 1965 Selmer 50W "Crocskin" with pedals. Boss OD1, Crybaby wah wah, Rat pedal, and a Hughes and Kettner valve volume boosting pedal.

I dont like master volume amps or rack set ups, but funnily enough do like to practise and record through Line 6 POD.

I also write my own stuff for fun- some very experimental. Will post the site later.

Used to - MS put paid to most of the feeling in my fingers though, so I had to stop. Most of the guitars sold now ('70 ish Las Paul, Tele with factory fitted Bigsby - can't remember the date now, but it was '60s, modern Strat) but I still have the '79 large headstock Strat (a real dog) to mess around on. Played through a '69 Marshall super tremolo for gigs, and any number of pedals/boxes

I guess that isnt to bad,But i was hoping for a cheapish 2nd hand one,because i wanna make sure she isnt just going through a fad that will only last for a few weeks/months,And then it wont be used again.

MMM: Just make sure you get a good sample - Squiers are individual and quality varies a lot when made in the far east. Watch out for fret ends sticking out of the neck...
Early 90:s Jap Squiers are sought after (more expensive) these days but hold excellent quality. A used Squier Strat - or maybe even a Tele (shorter) would be a good start. Set it up properly, and get a halfway decent (aim for 10" or 12" speaker, lowish watts) practice amp for it.


As for my musical connection - I am a bedroom guitarist these days, have done the R&R and cover band thing many moons ago. These days, I build and restore valve/tube amps, mostly low-watt stuff - and when I build some, it´s preferably in "odd" cabinets...like this one:

If you can try to guy a reasonable quality copy like the Squire Strat mentioned above. Practice amps 10 Watts are cheap as chips. If you buy a poor quality guitar, the action can be so high, it's a pig to hold down chords and that puts a lot of people off.

Don't forget the ear plugs for the rest of the family

BTW cool to see so many famous instruments/amps (and talents!) listed here. Most of that vintage inventory is hard cash these days. Not long ago, they threw broken AC30:s at us amp guys for bread money..different story now, damn Internet, damn collectors.

Well it looks like we have enough members so far for a fairly big band
All we need now is a drummer, I vote for Neil Peart. I saw Rush Live in Glasgow when Fairwell To Kings was their current album, and man they were simply awesome for a 3 piece band. These days Hold Your Fire is never out of the CD player for very long, Amy Mann backing vocals on Time Stand Still will melt the hardest heart.

Time for a wee music story from my days in 'Band For Life'. An Edinburgh based pub band, doing lots of Eagles, Lynard Skynard etc etc. We got a gig in East Wemyss in Fife, which turned out to be a Hells Angles meeting place Just previous to the gig, we had learned Freebird and Stairway To Heaven.

So we played the first set, got a pretty good reaction, but the barman said something you would seldom hear from staff. "Not loud enough." So we cranked up the backline and PA and opened the 2nd set with Freebird. Instant friendly riot Blasted through that set with some Who and Eagles stuff, finished with Stairway To Heaven, got told in no uncertain terms we better play an encore, asked the bikers what they wanted to hear "Freebird Really Loud." My ears rang for three hours after that gig.

I think we used to get a total of £20 for those pub gigs. Yet doing session guitar work for a Country and Western band I would get £400 and not even break into a sweat. Crazy business...
