Went to the garage today, originally to do some small uplifting stuff like washing down the engine bay in prep for sanding/painting. Ended up under the car, just to discover a few small "defects" in the floor region that I hadn´t noticed. From there, I quickly went to rip off both rear wings (since I had to order some other panels/stuff, I might as well know what was going on back there and save on combined shipping..

Why, oh why did I open that can of worms?




And I will spare you the sight of the remains of the boot floor.

OK; I knew it was rotten....but to really face the music is a different thing.

So - there goes another week of intense welding. Shame I have a full time job.

Couple of questions:

a) in my parts catalogue, there is a JP122/123 "repair panel, inner wing, rear" which covers the rearmost half of the inner wing. I can´t see from the drawing whether this panel includes the boxed section at the bottom, and the rear spring mount. It looks like it ends just aft of the bump stop. Who has seen such a panel?

b) On the RHS, the catalogue lists a "bracket" at the rear end of the inner wing. Some metal plate with a big hole in it. Do I need it, and what is it?

c) The catalogue also lists a JP168/169 "repair kit, rear wing mounting flange". It is drawn in 3 parts. WHo has seen one of these "kits"?

...and - more important (if you know the supplier and the panels) - how do they FIT? Expensive stuff with a bad fit is a no-no, maybe I should roll my own?

(Sorry I cannot name the UK company behind the catalog, the Swedish importer doesn´t list the name. All I can say is that the catalog is made up of really tiny and sometimes crappy drawn images, no photos. This is the only clue I can give you as to the UK supplier).

Looks like the inner rear wings have been patched already around the spring rear shackle plates.

Is the centre crossmember and floor sound? How about the sills? If they need attention, I would do them before the rear.

Inner wings are not a bad shape to work on, with just flat steel and a hammer to shape it. Weld, tap, weld, tap , weld, tap, tap, bash, tap (that was a corner), weld, tap....

MT: centre xmember is repaired, but reasonably well done. Ends are rusted, but solid. Small floor section subbed (seamwelded strip along and above xmember, both sides), looking and feeling good. RHS front floor section = big hole aft of A post/inner wing, but surrounding material is sound. Will let in a stiff piece of steel. Inner sills have survived miraclously (just one small RHS patch, and one cracked spot welded section that is easily repaired. The front rear spring hangers are very solid and unpatched - miracle again. Outer sills are knackered, but repairable (will put in new one on RHS and do a small patch inlay on LHS). Sill finishers will be swapped. B posts all OK - another miracle. All this established with a pointed hammer and some not-so-shy probing from underneath.

Sounds good in the crucial areas then. Rear inner wings and chassis rail extensions would probably benefit from your metal shaping skills. No reallly complex shapes back there, and usually lots of good metal to weld to.
