I just bought a 1960 Series II saloon. The central speedo has 4 lights
Upper left orange=oil pressure warning I guess
Lower left blue = full beam
upper right red = ignition
lower right orange = direction indicator (flashes)

freqently the direction indicator light stays on (not flashing) even when the steering column stalk is in the central (not indicating) position.

Sorry for my ignorance but is this a) a flasher unit problem, b) a wiring issue c)some other feature that I am unaware of?

The indicator should be on the end of the indicator stalk, that is your ignition warning light

wasn't the other orange one for the 'filter needs changing' light?

Hi 1960 should be a Minor 1000 with a gold faced speedo not a series 2, if someone fitted a later black faced speedo ( as I'm presuming from the colour of lights you have, correct me if I'm wrong) those are
left amber light - oil filter blocked
blue - high beam
red - ignition
right amber light - oil pressure

Dear All, Thanks for your feedback. Just to clarify here is a photo of speedo. The indictaor stalk does not have a light at the end but rather the right hand side light on the speedo flashes orange when indicating. As I said now and then it stays lit even when I switch the indicator off

Ah ! thats not normal - looks like someones put modern stalks on there looking at the end of the plasic bit in teh right of the pic.
You'll need to find out what its from, get the wiring for that thing and check that against the morris standard wiring, make sure the right wires are connected.

Thanks - so just to be sure the right hand side orange light should normally be the oil pressure warning light is that correct?

ok assuming that someone has fitted a new stalk and used the light in the speedo

this is rather a neat solution I guess, but loses a little of the character of the car. Nothing quite like the cab being lit up inside by the flashing stalk at night ;-)

If the light is the indicator tell tale and works as that most of the time then lets assume its wired up ok. But if it stays on sometimes then that normaly means that one of the bulbs in the indicator circuit has failed (only one direction would give this), BUT sometime a poor bulb connection can cause this effect, or indeed as the flasher unit get older it can start to show this fault

Best fix...

work your way round the car cleaning the bulbs and holders (worth doing anyway) see if that help, otherwise its a new flasher unit which should cost about 5 quid.

I've got the same thing with my '68, except it's the left light that stays lit even if the indicators are off - what is the poor bugger trying to tell me?

Are the side lights on when the indicator light is on?
Does the indicator bulb stay on when the ignition is off?
If so then you have a fault in that light unit or incorrect wiring.

Sidelights aren't on when the indicator light is on, and the bulb doesn't stay on when the ignition is off.
The bulb will start to flash when the indicators are on (obviously) but when they're off it stays on, not flashing. It turns on the moment the ignition is on.

That is not the original speedo, Morris Minor speedos only go up to 80 or 90mph, not 120mph, unless that is kph?
