generator for 51 sidevalve

Post by tortron »

hey guys, iv rececently just bought my first morrie - 1951 4 door sidevalve.
unfortunalty on the way home the armature in the generator decided to give out (luckly my cousin owns a car transporter  )
will a generator from a 58 match up no problem?
i have also been offered an alternator from one that has been converted, is that a better way to go?

thanks

The 58 dynamo won't be a straight fit - neither will an alternator. But i'm sure they can be 'made' to fit with some work. It's a long time since I had a SV - but I seem to remember a very heavy section fan belt was used - if so you will need to have a matching pulley on the dynamo/alternator - and of course make sure the pulleys line up. And of course if going to an alternator the wiring will need to be modified to remove the dynamo control box from the circuits.

I have been thinking of fitting an alternator but have been put off a bit by the large 'B' section belt used on the sidevalve. You would have to fit (make?) a wider pulley to the alternator.

hi, so if i were to swap the pullys out - from the original to the 58 i should be set? are there any major differences that would make this difficult?

I would say quite a few difficulties - but nothing is impossible - provided the pulleys will swap ok, and you can get the belt alignment sorted out.

This should be the 948/1098 dynamo - from Bull Motif. http://www.morrisminorspares.net/shop_item.php?ID=2924
I assume you already have a dynamo for your side valve ?

Hey guys, late reply but yes a minor 1000 generator is a direct swap into the sidevalve, just switch the pully over (just a nut) and you are away laughing :)

Aha - so you've done the job and it works ok ? Well done. Good to have the report back.

yea, haven't had any problems with it, im pretty sure that they are infact the same generator minus the pulley

tho of course after putting it it took 5 trys to leave, with the distributor plate comming loose, the brakes binding and the accelerator cable snapping  Oh well at least that rules any of that out from happening again

exactly, tho i should hope that im now well versed in the art of roadside repairs, buying a 1 way bus ticket will do that

if anything its more simpler than my chevette, many an hour spent putting various bits back on with anything availible, sports strapping tape works wonders when your distributor cap clips decide to work their way out in the middle of nowhere, infact i only had problems when i removed it and put new clips back on :o
a full tool bag is always in my boot

Good move - but there's a hell of lot more space around the engine than in a Chevette - which is nice...

yes, its quite nice not having to burn/bend myself around the exhaust headers to check the sparkplugs

One small point to fitting a C40 dynamo (ie the later type). Is your Series MM fitted with a water pump? If not then the fan blades will be on the end of the dynamo. Could be interesting fitting them to an alternator. If you can get the whole pulley assembly off the earlier C39 dynamo then you should be able to fit it to the C40 dynamo.
Best solution get the original dynamo rebuilt and keep the engine bay original.
