body changes.

Post by IaininTenbury »

Hi
I've just bought a 51 lowlight and noticed a few differences to my '49 mainly that the sills are now like later 1000s and the front inner wings now have the flange pointing down instead of horizontal.
Just curious as to when these changes took place. I know its not really important and too obscure to be pub quiz material!
cheers

Does it still have the short bonnet?

What is the chassis number on this car?

51 Lowlight

Post by Keith »

If it is a true lowlight, it would have been built in 1950 or before. So would be surpised if it had later transition or highlight parts. The first transition cars had all lowlight parts with the expection of the front wings and grill. During the first 7 months of 51 more highlight parts were added until the chassis was changed to the highlight chassis and long bonnet....

Mike Perry is the expert :D

Dosen't really have later parts, more body pressings like the inner wings, which presumably were changed around that time. I've got a late '50 lowlight with horizontal wing flanges and was wondering when the change happened, likewise the sills. (Though looking at this one more closely the outer sills have been renewed so may not be indicative of the original ones).
The wings, I'm happy to state are original, havign the same mist green paint as the rest of the body in the same (rust coming though) condition.

I know it looks odd on the pic with minor 1000 wheels on it, but the proper wheels were missing and the suspension was dismantled when I collected it, so had to fit later hubs to it to roll it onto the trailer. Its now back on MM wheels...

I reckon the car was built in january 1951, the nearest chasis number change was 81501 split bumper and fillet was discontinued, 81595 highlight introduced!

The book doesnt mention other body changes, would be worth asking Sandy Hamilton as he is a mine of minor info......

Book? Im I not getting credit for this? However if its wrong it was all Davids info OK? If so all pannels look proper for that car, the changes mentioned but propbably after produce the body panels would have been updated, especially as production was soon to change to completely highlight production?
