i recall several threads re size of van v saloon rim sizes but cany find them.
I have just collected three rims after having tyres removed one is approx 3/8ths" wider,i did have a pickup could be from there?

The wide van rims are roughly 20mm wider - however they are easy to spot as the hubcap mounting surface is flush with the outer edge on a standard rim - on the wide rims it is noticeably inset.

If the tyre is removed, the saloon rim is 3.5" across the INSIDE edge and the wide rims are 4.5"

If the wider wheel is an original wide wheel it should have the letters LP and 3 numbers after it stamped into one of the hub cap mountings. It should also have 4.5J stamped onto it where the tyre would normally be.

The correct stamping is LP917 but sometimes it can be hard to see because of the paintwork. changed to avoid confusion especially to me

Hang on... There are two wheels wider than standard arn't there? One has the extra tacked onto the outside, the other on the inside??

on a LP 917 a household yale key will fit perfectly from the outer rim to the inner flange , a good way of telling these from copies or other makes, but this will only apply to the 917

the other one with the offset to the front is LP 936

4" vers 4 "1/4 is not significant! I think you just have a slightly 'spread' rim there. The size is 3.5" - across the inner part where the tyre bead sits.

Minor saloon rims measure 3.5" across the INSIDE edge of where the tyre fits. If that's where you measured 4" then are you sure they are Minor rims? When the LP917 (and 936) are measured in the same place they are noticeably wider.

It's not quite that simple - there are 3 types of similar looking wheels in circulation. I did measure a few types of wheels but that was years ago and I can't remember it all now.

The LP917 has some of the extra width on the inside and some on the outside.
The LP936 has the same rim, but the other way round giving a very large amount of rim to the outer edge - I've never yet heard a good explanation of why the 'strange' LP936 wheels were made or what they were made for, but they are pretty rare anyway.

The Minor Developments wide rim was 5" not 4.5 and it also gives a bit more clearance to the front suspension upright allowing 175's on the front whereas the LP917 takes a maximum of 165's without needing spacers for tyre clearance to the front suspension.

Personally I wouldn't want the LP936's as they look far too 'Carlos Fandango' for my tastes, although some people prefer that. The Minor developments rims would be a very good option as they use proper tubeless rims (with the safety lip required to bead-lock tubeless tyres) and allow a wider choice of tyre.
