My engine has been stripped down for about 3 months now, and due to the good weather i am prepping it for spraying. I was just wondering as to err what finish the inside of the crankcase should be, its quite dull and there a couple of signs of rust. Would it be a good idea to just quickly go over the inside with a rotary wire brush? I will be Jizering and then powerwashing it all so loose dirt shouldnt be a problem!

I would get rid of any obvious 'rust' - otherwise leave as is ! Cleanliness is the important factor.

Just wanted to back that one up! It equals long life.
There is a paint made for inside engine blocks, I think Frost sell it, it looks the same as the original stuff, but can't see the inside of an unpainted block rusting though!

Ok, ill give it a quick going over to make sure theres no crud in there for good measure.

Clean everything, and don't try to repaint anything internal, the risk of uncured paint of flaky scabs in the oil isn't worth it really.

My method is - wire brush, degrease, jetwash (or dishwash!!! depending on size), dunk in heating oil (so the water doesn't get a chance to mark the surfaces), then blow dry with the airline.

Wear eye and ear protection, you get good blasts out of the oilways accompanied by and some fairly extreme whistling.
(And head protection if the other half wasn't expecting to find engine parts in the dishwasher)

If something is not going to be used for a while then a quick dunk in the heating oil again and wrap in brown paper.

Hello all,

I seem to remember a while back reading a recommendation to paint the internals of an engine block. (D. Vizard??). This was for aperformance modified engine and the reason was to improve oil flow off the walls back into the sump. I can't see it being helpful for a road car?

Not heard of that one - and I have read The Wizards book many times ! Definitely don't want paint flaking off - so leave well alone is my motto!

Didnt manage to get round to the engine this week. I was hoping to get it sprayed or at least prepped! But the cold weather has closed in now......oh well thats life!

Cold maybe - but it's DRY !!! I would much rather have the cold than the rain!! Especially as my garages are south facing - and the low sun at this time of year beams right inside - very light and very warm !

Alright for some, hopefully ill be able to bring out the masking tape and spray gun this weekend. Ill ignore my Design paper deadline for the monday!!

I would leave the interior of the engine clean, I agree with BMC. Whether or not it might improve oil flow, the difference would probably be negligible on a road car, and not worth the risk of flakes... At least in my opinion
As to spraying the outside, one of the most satisfying jobs I've done... Makes it feel like a new engine. I did mine in the middle of a thunderstorm! I was just inside the garage, though, so it didn't really get wet. Pretty fun, though... You get such extreme weather out here (at least compared to England)!
