How does the MM gearlever come out? I removed engine and gearbox today and could not get the lever removed, luckily the gearbox crossmember bolts were easily undone and I was able to drop this down. The gearbox is really heavy compared to the 1000 box.
The engine will need repainted and is currently gold, what is the correct colour? The gearbox is a dark gray.

Hiya David, gold is probably a "gold seal" replacement engine and definitley not correct for a sidevalve.Mine is a dark green, which is a "52.Some are grey,as your gearbox.I would go for the grey,as the gearbox is probably the original. All the best,John.

To remove the gear lever undo the plate on top of the gearbox. beware there are 3 detent springs on top of ball bearings at the front of the cover plate under a raised boss. These are under compression so be carefull when lifting off the plate, you don't want to be fishing around for them in the bottom of the gearbox.
The gear lever is located to the plate with a conical spring, washer and split pin.
The spring can break in use, leaving you with a bunch of neutrals so if you want a spare, let me know.

It looks like there's a screw at the rear of the cap at the base of the lever which would then lift off, the lever and felt washer should then lift out.
Thet are heavy aren't they, seems like about twice the weight of a 1000 box (specially when it's sitting on your chest trying to locate it to the engine!)
