Hi, from another new moggie owner

Well, no doubt this is in the wrong section as I have just joined the forum and have yet to see were everything should be, oops.

We have just bought a 63 traveller after looking around for a while, we being old car nuts with MGs and a sprite. A friend bought a traveller to comute from devon to london and when we saw it, thought "thats the car we need" The drive back from the seller ( banbury ) was great, the OH thinks its super, in fact the only mishap was the car I was driving ran out of fuel. oops.

So a couple of questions, the car is very good apart from a passenger floor section and a bit of wood that needs fixing, but the wheels are rather rusty and sad - tyres also a rather odd match.
Can you all recomend a good tyre size, and what do I do about getting new wheels, does anybody do refurbished ?

Thanks, and look forward to seeing you on the road.

Sounds great. Standard wheels are plentiful - ask in Wanted section. Tyres can be either 145 x14 or 155 x 14 - both 80 section. The rims are too narrow (3.5") to take any low profile tyres. Some of the suppliers offer 'Minilite' lookalike wheels and larger width/low profile tyres. If you need a full set of new tyres anyway - they may be worth considering. Note the PCD is 4" on the Minor so NONE of the modern car wheels will fit! If your car has been fitted with disc brakes it may now have wheels with 3.75" PCD (ex Marina) - so do check before looking for any new wheels.

Years ago (35!) I bought 5 alloy wheel called/by Midland Metallic they are a 4 spoke wheel and take a 175 14 80 tyre and I think they still look great - I had to move the boot shelf up to get the spare in! and I took the original wheels, in good order, to the scrappy!
Those were the days, anybody heard of the Midlands?

^^^^ ???

Alan - Midland Metallic does sound familiar - and I Googled for them and found a few references to alloy wheels by them - but nothing about the Co itself.

Not complicated, really - a touch of levity, a mere jest

Hi and welcome!

There are a few places i've come across that offer a sandblast/refurb service for wheels but i've always opted for a wire brush myself. With regards to tyres, both 145 and 155 are relatively easy to come by. I've opted for 155 r 14 80's on my traveller because their outer diameter is much closer to that of the original crossply tyres therefore keeping engine revs down (when you compare a 145 with the original crossply there is a marked difference in diameter).

Good luck and happy minoring!!!

Thanks,

looks standard, on 145s. interesting you use 155s

I did further searches on the forum, and have found one parts seller selling new wheels, but will try the wanted section first. like most of us, have a selection of wheels and tyres around taking space up, why oh why cannot every thing run on the same

155 width tyres are a lot easier to come by than 145s.

None of the 'online' or 'wholesale' places advertise 145s and your local tyre place certainly wont have any to hand in 14" diameter.

I had a set of 155s fitted for around £120, that included supply and fit, from a local tyre outlet.
What would Macgyver do..?
