Gear lever rattle

I recently had a new clutch fitted and while my mechanic and i were doing the job we decided to put a couple of drops of oil onto the base of the gear lever/lever seat. The oil has loosened the movement but has created a fairly high buzzing noise which gets worse at higher speeds. I regret having lubricated this part as the noise is rather irritating. I was wondering if anyone knows how to stop this noise other than holding the gear lever while driving?

You could take it out and renew the liitle plastic bush - also coat the moving parts with grease! Old cure for this on Mini was to slide a rubber tube down over the length of the gear stick - dunno if that would work on a Minor but it's worth a try!

Replace the 'O' ring at the base of the gearstick.

There is also an anti-rattle plunger and spring - maybe they are missing or the spring has given up over the years!
