Still looking at options on where to go with the Moggy, and am seriously considering using a spare 4AGE lurking in the garage.

It's supposed to be a spare for one of the converted Minis, but seems a shame to rebuild it and just leave it sitting there

Anyone got any experience of converting one to RWD ?

Ebay doesn't seem to offer much in the way of RWD Toyota boxes, but I understand they can be stuck on a Fraud type9, which seems common and pretty cheap.


Any thoughts ?

Good luck finding a RWD toyota box though.

if you ask aroun on few forums your bound to find a box. They are great engines and there are loads of things ot do to them! like turbocharge etc.

Well, looks like it's not too hard to sort a suitable bell housing to fit a (common as muck and cheap) Ford Type9.

Seems a few kit cars use the 4AGE onto Type 9 and JLH offer a bell housing kit for it too.

The 4AGE is indeed a superb engine. The Mini certainly shifts! Won't bog down with full throttle from 1200rpm in 5th, sounds quite 'angry' from about 4500, and zips round to the factory redline of 7800

Had a rolling road session when we were fine tuning the Megasquirt install, and clocked 138bhp @6k with 148lbs @4k

Evil thoughts. Maybe time to make a manifold for the bike bodies...

Excellent Mini story!! Well done. Did the welded together driveshafts really work ? Or is that just a temporary fix ?

Might be worth trying to find the transfer box from a 4A-F (the four wheel drive version of the same engine). I had a whole unit until recently, when it went to the scrapyard in the sky.......

Yes it's becoming quite popular here in Oz

Both these sites are quite informative on the 4A-ge's and also there is a wealth of info on converting from FWD to RWD.

No problems with the shafts at all.

Used them on the car for a couple of months, which included some testing of the new engine, that may have been a little more 'enthusiastic' than it prudent on DIY shafts , though did try to keep wheel spin to a minimum when pulling away to avoid shock loading them. (Admittedly a bit of 'light' powered understeer out of roundabouts was allowed).

Got a local engineering co to sleeve & weld some proper shafts, then swapped them over after using the DIY ones to do the regular shows, so probably had 500-1000 miles on them.

Corolla Four wheel drive estate, a rare car in its own right!

You know what....? I happen to have a 5spd RWD toyota box sitting in my garage but I was going to use it for my 5spd conversion. I believe its from a Celica 1600, I even have the toyota propshaft.

If you are interested make me an offer... I go to haywards heath quite often, so depending where you are in kent collection/delivery might be possible
