what is the cause of clutch squeal when cold, its ok when the car has been run a few minutes, does not happen all the time
there is no slipping and all gears engage ok

Probably due to the cold

Are you sure it's the clutch and not the fan belt?

If it is the clutch, most likely condensation/damp on the flywheel which gets into the spaces between the clutch lining segments.

The other possibility is the water pump as they can make some strange noises when they are on the way out.

i can feel it on the clutch so to speak

Better hope it's not the carbon thrust on last legs. Have a look through the inspection hole.

going to get larger engine and new gearbox soon anyway hopefully thanks happy new year

I once had an input shaft that would do just that, it was the bush in the end of the crankshaft running dry and making it's self known!

Thats why its always worth changing at the same time as doing a clutch as its often forgotton about.

At least put a dab of moly grease in there!

I get this squeal sometimes after an initial startup. No difference with weather, although the car is in a dry, warm garage. Definitely is when the the clutch pedal is depressed, carbon thrust has plenty of life left, checked a few days ago. The noise lasts only for short while, then nothing until another cold start, but is very inconsistent.

Been doing it for some while now (3/4 years).

Clutch is the 1275 diaphragm cover plate and special driven plate for the Toyota T50 primary shaft spline, and operates quite normally. So spigot bush (yes I did use a dab of grease on assembly!)? Mmmm, hope not as it's also special for the Toyota primary shaft, but could be a real possibility? Will see if it gets worse or somehow noticeable in another way. Otherwise will wait until I need to change the clutch.
