Ever met this problem??

Post by FrankM83 »

My mechanic stripped the engine apart and met something he said caouldn't beleive, the conrod bearing , 7 out of 8 were marked +10 and 1 was STD so one connecting rod had a +10 bearing and a STD bearing running on the crank!

After listening to stories from an Uncle who worked at Longbridge I can believe it if a "factory recon" engine

Maybe it was only a +5 over grind on that bearing :)

Just shows how tough the engines are though.

actually Kevin, what the mechanic told me, that after the rebuild it will need 2 more generations of use before a next rebuild! he actually couldn't beleive what he was seeing now he's checking if this did any damage to the crank also another question the bores seem to have a very slight 'lip' don't know what actually called sorry do you recommend reboring the engine? Thanks

Lip indicates quite severe bore wear - but if you are not planning huge mileage (on Malta!) then the lip can be rubbed away, the bores can be roughed up to remove the 'glaze' - and new rings on the existing pistons (if not showing any damage) would be a low cost fix that should be good for say 10,000 miles. The crank bearing - well, maybe that shell just missed the stamping! Seems unlikely it could really have run like that - any chance of a picture of the shells, showing the wear pattern ?

yes I'll try to get picture of it as soon as the mechanic brings the block and everything back from then engineers but I'll probably use another block to be safe as I have another one which stil has a beautiful bore

Ah well - good bores are always going to do better! Just check the pistons carefully - lands not badly worn and no obvious cracking between the lands.
