Speedo question

Post by DanRodd »

Hi all,

Like many im sure my speedo's mileometer doesnt work and the needle clicks up every few seconds instead of staying where it should.

I have another speedo which im hoping will work, but i want to find out wether it will read accurately as it is a different number, but from a late Minor.

My car is a 1968 4 door saloon,1098 with what i assume is the standard 4.22 axle.I have 145x14 radials on but so do most Minors.
The speedo currently fitted is a MPH/kph one with a SN of SN4423/04 and 1408

My spare speedo is a MPH one with a number of SN4419/04 and 1376(8?)

Was wondering if anyone could tell me if i can fit this to my Minor,as im a bit of a worrier when it comes to speed cameras,so i want to rid my mind of a wobbly needle!

Ive checked the potteries branch stie list of numbers but it didnt really give me the answer i was after. Also anyone with a similar car could tell me what they have in theirs would be a great help!

cheers,
Dan

The 1408 and 1376 are the number of turns of the cable per mile. So - there will be a difference - but not that much.

Speedo

Post by Willie »

There was a special speedo available,SN4419/12, which was to suit the
in those days 'new fangled' Dunlop radial tyres (145X14N) so, it would appear, that ALL Minors fitted with 145 radials read slightly incorrectly.
It is probably within the percentage tolerance of speed cameras anyway.
I haven't been prosecuted yet!

speedo accuracy

Post by Willie »

It appears that the revolutions per mile for a 520X14 crossply =865
and a 145X14 radial =892.

I had a very wobbly needle in my Traveller, but it wasn't the head it was the cable.

its easy to fix.. so worth a try
Disconnect the cable at the top end and feed it out into the engine bay.

Now pull the inner out and inspect it. If there are any loose cores replace it. If it is ok clean it in petrol and pop the inner back in back in tie it up and drive round the block.
Repeat the cleaning until you think the outer is probably clean as well.

Finally a thin smear of copperslip and reconnect to the head.

I then had a really smooth needle.

Good luck

Just follow a truck on the Mway - it will be doing exactly 56 mph - unless he has pulled the fuse on the limiter!
