One of lifes mysteries, the singular shoe.....

Ok so your driving along the road and there you see one - a singular shoe or trainer led on the side of the road - can be anwhere from country lanes to motorways.
Had the misfortune to go on a bus a few years back and from the top you could see the phenomenon had also migrated to the tops of bus shelters - some had loads of shoes on them.
So what goes on here??? are little green men to blame? is there a cult of the shoe throwers? What there must be a reason?
So youve got an old pair of shoes what makes someone think hmm I'll chuck one out of the window on the way to bognor regis and the other near portsmouth e.g.
Someone must know ......
