As theres a noisy box thread running heres a knackered one thread

Changed the GB oil out last week amongst other things and found a few nasty bits in the well of the drainplug.

Its running the same as normal and a lot more quietly & smoother since the oil change, its never wanted to go from 3rd to 2nd without much a crunching so guess this migth be the cause.

Not too worried as its only for local daily use & next year its getting a 5 speed , just pretty curious as to what the bits are?





Hard to see in the pic but the bit on the left is definitely an edge of something circular.

Bearing cage ? Usually the oil contains bits of 1st and reverse gear - since they have no syncro.

Looks like part of the interlocking ring for 2nd and 3rd gear bushes. Part 90 in the Haynes manual for the ribbed type gearbox.

Try picking up the bits with a magnet. If they stick to the magnet it's gears or bearing bits, if not, it's thrust washer or locking ring bits.

Must have been low on oil if that match came out as clean as that

What youve never heard of the old dodgy second hand car dealer trick for a noisy gearbox - put a pair of tights in there - thats serious too not an urban myth ! it used to happen !

Along with good thick EP90 or even 140 oil! And sometimes - sawdust!

I now you'll disagree with this BMC from a viscosity & needs that to work point but always swear by putting a half tub of stp / molyslip / wynns supercharge whatevers on offer in with a new change of gearbox oil 9provided its not a performance car)
Quietens it down something amazing.
Was in the factors teh other week for just such a thing, what i wanted was way too expensive - the full on treatment was £30 + vat .
Used it once in a new chinese tractor i built that arrived as a flatpack! - the gearbox was severely loud, must say it was money well spent at the time.

seriously have you tried that liqid sealer with ptfe in. Absolutely great for sealing pipes especially threaded petrol ones.http://www.intek-uk.com/threadsealing.htm

I should have paid more attention in the sciences at school as thats one I have not come across before.
That liquid PTFE looks useful.
