Alternator

After a lengthy search I found the issue of MM that had wiring instuctions for fitting an alternator, it says use a Mini alternator. Is that it, end of story, or did different years have a different type fitted, what model/number do I need? 11AC? Also is there just one different fixing bracket needed? Thanks for any advise!

Better with 16/17/18 ACR - it bolts straight on - with the Mini rear mounting bracket. Need to get correct 'hand' alternator - most Fords etc are opposite hand - ie the alt sits on the nearside of the engine - Mini/1100 etc will be correct - sitting on offside of engine. You'll also need a new slightly shorter fan belt.

You don't need the Mini bracket. Use the one supplied for the Minor dynamo and fit a single length of threaded rod right through front and rear brackets adding nuts and spring washers between them so that the alternator can be held tight against the front bracket and spaced tight away from the rear one. Altogether you will need 6 nuts and as many spring washers plus a few flat ones to ensure the pully is alighted correctly.

It can be done that way - but the alternator may end up at a slight angle and the Mini brackets are readily available from the same scrappy that provides the alt!

Thanks, I presume these ACR alternators have a built in control box, and 16/17/18 indicate different outputs?

It's been quite a few years since I saw a classic Mini in any of the local scrapyards. Come to think of it I can't even remember the last time I saw a Metro or a Maestro. :(

Indeed - whereas the 11 AC used external controls - a 4TR unit and a 6RA relay if I remember correctly - and fancy wiring between them !

Thanks for clarification, I have a unit in the garage, which I'll need to check the output, as I hope to use it as an exchange, I'm sure it will have to be like for like!

I believe the Lucas ACR outputs are:

15ACR 27A
16ACR 34A
17ACR 38A
18ACR 43A

The larger bodied 23ACR is definitely 55A (I have one fitted), and the 25ACR is around 60A, I think.

Wouldn't it be easier to name them 27ACR, 34ACR, 38ACR and 43ACR?? :lol:

Hello Peetee,

I'm sorry but I don't like your way at all. Why make a dog's dinner when a simple purpose built bracket is readily available.
Any fastener through a couple of holes, as in this case should be plain shanked, to avoid wearing both the fastener and the components.

Even with the correct brackets bolts not screws should be used. (For the befit of those confused, bolts have a plain shank and screws are threaded all the way to the head)

No problem. But for those on a budget it is a cheap and easily obtainable option.
