Strange noise when braking

Hello there, Basically there's a funny noise when I'm braking, at first I thought it was the bushes but on replacing them I noticed the old ones weren't actually in that bad a condition.

Suffice to say I still have the noise, I think it's coming from the drivers side rear brake. It sounds like something rotating and scraping quickly and it doesn't occur when I brake hard. I've had the drum off and a given it a clean up but I'm a bit stumped as to what could be causing it. Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks for your time

Dan

It sounds like something metal catching on something and scraping along it as it turns. It kind of has a kushunk kushunk kushunk sound to it, if thats not to batman :)

Have you taken the brake drum off and looked at the condition of the brake shoe/s? Sounds like they are worn right down. If they are very badly worn then they might damage - groove - the inside of the drums.

I've replaced the rear brake shoes but not the front, I'll give those a check tomorrow. I forgot to mention that I can sometimes feel it through the brake pedal like it's catching on something. I'm not sure if that really helps but it's good to have all the facts :)

Daft guess but are the rear shoes centrally located? they should set themselves the first time you use them but not if the base of the snail to top of the Cyl is corroded?

Now if it had been a kishuink not a kushunk then chances are thats one of the handbrake cables rubbing on the propshaft - trust me if the mountain dog is in the back it does it all the time. Just havn't got round to relocatng them.
Have a gander at your prop and see if there are any visible circular scribe marks.
If its a tinny jngly noise then thats your cause (well unless santas suck in the exhaust :-) )

I've had a look at the prop and it all looked fine and dandy :) Though thinking back now when I replaced the brake shoes today I noticed that the cylinder is quite loose, could this be causing the problem or part of it?

I seem to have worded that last bit like a Dickensian drama, ah well.

The rear cylinders should be loose - they need to slide up and down in the backplate. Does it make this amazing noise when you pull on the handbrake ?

:D No it's only when I use the brake pedal

Ahh - well if it was rear brakes it would surely do it with the handbrake. Better have a look at the fronts now.

If one happened to tug on the hand brake while moving ...

I gave it another check over this morning and it turned out the damper arm wasn't tight enough what a relief and noise eliminated hurrah! Thank you for the advice :)

Glad you found it as your description
It sounds like something rotating and scraping quickly and it doesn't occur when I brake hard.
would not have made me look for that, something else learnt.
