As you can see from my sig pic, my Morris is crying out for a respray. I've taken it to couple of places in town but no one seems keen to quote me.
Can anyone recommended a spray shop around Gloucester? I'm not looking for a show winner and I'm willing to strip and rebuild the car myself.

I'm tempted to have a go at it myself. Compressors aren't too expensive any more and Machine Mart does spray guns. However, I don't have a clue about paint and there's no way I can fit the car in my garage. How hard can it be?

As you will be aware, pro resprays are expensive, but the DIY kit to do it yourself is now cheap. It is possible to get an excellent finish from even an HVLP spray gun, it's all in the prep work. Cellulose is very forgiving, and with just a little practice pretty easy if the prep work is done right.

White is one of the easiest colours to do, it hides a multitude of sins.

Working inside is preferable though, and all safety precautions must be followed.

I agree about HVLP guns, less overspray, more economic on paint and easy to use.

I spent £2500 on a respray for my 1966 VW camper and I don't intend spending the same on our morris. For a start, there's less to paint!

Thanks for the tips on DIY paint jobs. I'm feeling pretty confident it can be done. I've done a little research. HVLP is High Volume Low Pressure. These spray guns have the paint can thingy mounted above the trigger. I'm looking at this gun and this compressor

I'll wait til the summer and clear out my garage so I can get the car in. What could go wrong!

You are doing the right thing by doing your research first. I don't think your choice of gun and compressor are compatible. The gun specs require 3hp compressor. I would go for a smaller gun, have a look on Ebay. I have sprayed panels with a so called touch up gun. It won't tackle a complete respray in one go, but you could tackle a panel at a time, probably not a bad idea for a first time sprayer. Another route for HVLP is a dedicated turbine set up. Argos do an earlex system for less than £60. Not a quality gun, and you must clean it carefully after use and don,t leave thinners in it. I have had good results using 2 pack and synthetic enamel with one, although I have never used cellulose in it.
I'm no expert, you pays your money and makes your own choice.

I'm in the process of doing mine. This is my first go at a real respray, and it's turning out quite well. I'm using acrylic. Prior to this I had no experience at all with compressors, mixing paint or spray guns. It has not been too hard to get an acceptable finish "off the gun" and a very good finish with some wet rubbing and polish. The acrylic is VERY forgiving. I managed to scratch a few panels in re-assembly and careful repairs are invisible.

It's taking a lot longer than I expected, and has been supremely frustrating at times, but I'm glad I'm doing it.

The total cost, even including buying a decent compressor, guns and supplies has been much less than half the cost of a reasonable professional respray.

Do your own research and see what you think, but if you've got the space and the patience, I say - GO FOR IT!!!
